Eastlake Council Member Resigns Amid City Hall Conflict

Danyeill Kostelnik says she is leaving with her integrity intact, her conscience clear, and her commitment to Eastlake unchanged — but no longer willing to serve under what she calls false accusations, threats and social-media-driven harassment.

An Eastlake City Council member has resigned her seat effective immediately, citing ongoing harassment, threats and what she described as a corrosive political environment — while making clear she has no regrets about the allegations she raised.

Danyeill Kostelnik submitted her formal resignation to the Council President, members of Council, and the Law Director. The city's administration notified Council of the resignation, stating that formal acceptance will be placed on the agenda at the next regular meeting.

What Happens Next

Once Council accepts the resignation, the vacancy will be publicly posted and the city will begin accepting resumes. Council will have 30 days from the date of acceptance to fill the seat. If no appointment is made within that window, the authority to appoint passes to the Mayor.

Legislation currently on the agenda for a third reading will not be affected and will proceed as scheduled.

'This Is Not Surrender'

Kostelnik was emphatic in her letter that the decision was not made under pressure.

"This decision is not being made because I do not believe in the evidence I have presented, nor is it because I am intimidated, pressured, or required to do so," she wrote. "I stand firmly behind the concerns I raised, the charges I brought forward, and the documentation that supports them."

She described her departure as a deliberate choice — stepping away from what she called false accusations, threats, harassment, intimidation and misinformation-filled social media posts that had pulled focus away from serving Eastlake residents.

"I am making this decision for the right reasons," she wrote, "because I can no longer sit by and allow false accusations, threats, harassment, intimidation, and reckless social media posts filled with misinformation to continue distracting from the work that should be focused on serving the residents of Eastlake."

Defending the Mayor

A significant portion of Kostelnik's letter focused on her husband, Eastlake Mayor Kevin Kostelnik, and what she described as unfair attacks on his character.

"Kevin ran for Mayor because he believes in this city, its residents, and doing what is right," she wrote. "I cannot idly stand by and watch the Mayor's reputation be questioned and damaged by false statements, misinformation, and attacks on his character for matters that were never his responsibility."

She said the false accusations being made against both of them had brought out the worst in a situation that should never have escalated this far.

The Personal Toll

Kostelnik described a situation that had spread far beyond Council chambers, touching nearly every aspect of her life.

"This situation has now extended far beyond Council chambers," she wrote. "It has affected my family, my personal life, my peace of mind, my employment, and my ability to continue serving effectively."

She also expressed concern for fellow Council members, saying she did not want others forced into difficult decisions under pressure or subjected to the same retaliation she experienced. Taxpayer resources, she argued, should not be spent on prolonged internal hostility.

A Warning About Social Media

Kostelnik closed her letter with a candid reflection on the role social media played in the conflict.

"You cannot govern a city through Facebook," she wrote. "Social media is not real life, and too often we live in a world where if something is posted online, people assume it must be true."

Her advice to Eastlake residents was direct: do your homework, ask questions, seek facts and look beyond the noise.

She closed on a note of confidence that the full story will eventually come out. "I leave with my integrity intact, my conscience clear, and my commitment to the residents of Eastlake unchanged," she wrote.
